Coming to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) for surgery, treatment or to sit with someone you love is stressful enough without having to work out where to sleep. The main campus at 55 Fruit Street sits in Boston’s West End, at the foot of Beacon Hill and right beside the Charles/MGH Red Line station, so there are hotels you can walk to in a few minutes. Below: walkable hotels, hospital rates, kitchen options and the lodging resources Mass General Brigham lists for families.

Quick answer: For the shortest walk, book the Wyndham Boston Beacon Hill (directly across the street, with special rates for hospital guests) or The Liberty on Charles Street. For long or budget-conscious stays, ask about MGH at the Beacon House, a hospital-sponsored residence for MGH patients and families only, or a kitchen suite at the Residence Inn Boston Cambridge, one Red Line stop away.

It advertises special rates for hospital guests (call the hotel for eligibility) and has a seasonal rooftop pool. The most practical choice for pre-dawn surgery check-ins and families who want to go back and forth often.
  • The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel – 215 Charles Street, steps from the hospital and about a 3-minute walk to Charles/MGH station. It occupies the former Charles Street Jail, built in 1851, and has several restaurants and bars plus the Esplanade on its doorstep. A good fit for a short, more comfortable stay. Mass General Brigham includes it on its list of nearby hotels.
  • The Whitney Hotel – 170 Charles Street, about a 10-minute walk to MGH and a minute from Charles/MGH station. A quieter boutique hotel with a garden, free bike rentals and a pet-friendly policy. Suits visitors who want calm streets around them after a long day on the ward.
  • Hotel Indigo Boston Garden – about 0.4 mi from MGH per IHG, above North Station. Easy for anyone arriving by commuter rail or Amtrak Downeaster, and on the hospital’s list of nearby hotels.
  • Eurostars The Boxer – 107 Merrimac Street, a 4-minute walk from North Station and on Mass General Brigham’s list for MGH. A smaller boutique option. Check the nightly resort fee before you book.

Extended stays with kitchens

For long treatments, transplants or NICU stays, a kitchen and a laundry room make a real difference to both cost and wellbeing.

  • MGH at the Beacon House – 19 Myrtle Street on Beacon Hill, a hospital-sponsored residence for Mass General patients and family members only. According to Joe’s House, studios with a private bath and kitchen run about $75–$120 per night and shared-kitchen rooms about $45–$60, with rates listed through 2027. There is no on-site parking. A healthcare facility contact usually arranges the booking, so ask your care team or social worker, or call 617-726-7679.
  • Residence Inn Boston Cambridge – 120 Broadway, Cambridge, about 310 m from Kendall/MIT station, one Red Line stop from Charles/MGH. Apartment-style suites with kitchens and a free breakfast make it good for multi-week stays.

Mass General Brigham also lists nonprofit lodging for longer stays, including the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge Boston (617-396-5500), Ronald McDonald House Boston Harbor, Fisher House of Boston, Hospitality Homes, Nick’s House and The Boston House. Furnished apartments usually require a 30-day minimum.

Best value and hospital rates

Mass General Brigham notes that many area hotels offer discounted rates to its visitors and suggests you ask for the “best available or medical rate” when you book. The nonprofit Joe’s House also lists negotiated rates:

  • Holiday Inn Express & Suites Boston – Cambridge – 250 Monsignor O’Brien Highway, about 1 mi from MGH per IHG, near Lechmere Green Line station. Joe’s House lists up to 10% off the best available rate for patients, families and caregivers, valid through December 31, 2026. Book online or by the toll-free line using the Joe’s House rate.
  • Holiday Inn Boston Bunker Hill Area – 30 Washington Street, Somerville, under 3 miles from MGH. Joe’s House lists 12% off the best available rate for MGH patients, families and caregivers (through December 31, 2026, subject to availability). The hotel also lists a free shuttle within a three-mile radius, so confirm hospital drop-offs when you book.
  • Kimpton Marlowe Hotel – about 0.5 mi from MGH per IHG, across the river in East Cambridge. Often cheaper than Beacon Hill hotels on weekends, and well placed for walks along the Charles.

Getting there, shuttles & parking

Transit: Per Mass General Brigham, the hospital is directly across from the Charles/MGH stop on the MBTA Red Line. Bowdoin (Blue Line) is a short walk away and North Station (Green and Orange Lines, commuter rail) is nearby. Mass General Brigham also runs shuttles between its locations, and the schedule is on its website.

Parking: Patients and visitors can use the Fruit Street, Parkman Street, Yawkey Center and Charles River Plaza (entrance at 207 Cambridge Street) garages. Mass General Brigham publishes these validated patient and visitor rates, effective February 1, 2026: free for up to 30 minutes, $11 up to 1 hour, $12 for 1–2 hours, $14 for 2–4 hours, $16 for 4–6 hours, $19 for 6–8 hours and $21 for 8–24 hours. Non-validated parking costs much more ($65 for 3–24 hours), so always validate your ticket at the cashier on the garage ground floor, because there are no cashiers at the exits. Valet is available at the Wang and Yawkey Centers. Patients with repeat visits for chemotherapy or radiation can ask their provider about the Cancer Institute Parking Program. Parking office: 617-726-8886.

Tips for patients and families

  • Always ask for the hospital or medical rate. Some hotels need a letter or appointment confirmation.
  • Choose free-cancellation rates. Surgery dates and discharges often change at short notice.
  • Hotel valet in Beacon Hill costs around $69–$75 a night. Validated hospital garage parking or the T can be cheaper.
  • Talk to MGH Social Service early if you need long-term or low-cost housing, because hospitality residences fill up.
