The mistake that costs the most: booking before the date is fixed
Stadium trips are not like cruise trips. A cruise sails when the itinerary says it sails. A football match moves for television, a playoff opponent is unknown until the week before, and a stadium tour adds dates after hotels have already filled.
That single difference drives almost every piece of advice on this page. At Anfield, Premier League kickoff times are confirmed only weeks ahead and a Sunday fixture can become a Saturday one. At the Bernabéu, LaLiga does the same. At Allegiant Stadium, Strip prices can jump within hours of the College Football Playoff semifinals deciding who plays.
The answer is the same at all eight venues: book a refundable rate as soon as the event is announced, then re-check as the date firms up. Waiting for a last-minute bargain works for ordinary city breaks. It does not work the night 70,000 other people need a bed in the same postcode.

The three venues where you can stay on the doorstep
At most stadiums “nearby” means a ride. At three of these it genuinely means a walk out of the lobby:
- Madison Square Garden — The New Yorker and the Fairfield Inn & Suites Penn Station sit under 500 feet away. Penn Station is directly beneath the arena, with Amtrak, LIRR and NJ Transit all arriving underneath you.
- Mercedes-Benz Stadium — Reverb by Hard Rock is directly across the street, and most of downtown Atlanta is a 5–15 minute walk.
- Santiago Bernabéu — the Holiday Inn Madrid–Bernabéu faces the stadium across the Paseo de la Castellana, a block from the Metro.
At the other end, MetLife is the one to plan around. The closest hotel is about 0.6 miles, but the walk runs alongside highways and is not a pleasant one. Nearly everyone drives or takes the train, and the hotel supply around the Meadowlands is genuinely limited — which is why rooms there behave like event tickets rather than hotel rooms.
Match-day transit: the rules that are not obvious
Every one of these stadiums expects most of its crowd to arrive by public transport, and several run services that exist only on event days with conditions attached.
MetLife: the train only runs for big events
Meadowlands Rail Service operates only when attendance is expected above 50,000. The rail station has no ticket agents and no machines, so you must buy in advance — and buy a round trip, because you need a ticket to board the return. Event-day tickets are valid only that day.
Anfield: two buses, two different services
The 917 match-day bus leaves from Commutation Row near Lime Street, takes about 15 minutes, runs every 10 minutes from three and a half hours before kickoff, and stops 30 minutes before. The separate Soccerbus runs from Sandhills on the Merseyrail Northern Line to Walton Lane at £2 single, £4 return, or £12 for a group of four. Liverpool FC publishes two different Soccerbus start times, so check the current schedule rather than an old guide.
Wembley: arrive an hour early at the station, not the stadium
Around three-quarters of the crowd travels by public transport, and the stadium advises being at your station at least an hour before kick-off. Wembley Stadium station is about 400 metres away and one stop — roughly nine minutes — from Marylebone, which makes a central London base perfectly workable.
Atlanta: the station changed its name
The closest MARTA stop was renamed SEC District in December 2025, having been GWCC/CNN Center before that. Any guide written earlier still uses the old name. The fare is $2.50 each way and tap-to-pay works.
Parking: mostly pre-booked, rarely published
Here is a pattern worth knowing before you plan to drive: not one of these eight venues publishes a flat event-day parking rate. SoFi’s own page says rates vary by event. Allegiant sells through SpotHero. Mercedes-Benz sells through its own portal. MetLife requires pre-paid permits. The Bernabéu’s official “Plan your visit” page still lists parking information as coming soon.
Three venues add restrictions that catch drivers out:
- Wembley: street parking is prohibited on event days, official car parks must be pre-booked and are not run by the stadium, and London’s ULEZ adds £12.50 a day for a non-compliant vehicle.
- Anfield: official spaces must be pre-booked with none sold on the day, and a residents’ parking scheme is enforced with fines. Anfield Road closes four hours before kickoff and Walton Breck Road 90 minutes before.
- MetLife: lots open five hours before kick-off and close two hours after. There is no turning up and paying.
The practical conclusion at all eight: if a hotel within walking or one-train distance costs a little more, it is usually cheaper than driving once parking and the time cost are counted.
Small details that change the day
Anfield has a bag limit of A5 size and no left-luggage facility. If your match is on a checkout day, leave your bag at the hotel — there is nowhere at the ground to put it. This single detail is the most common reason people miss the start.
Wembley moves non-ticket holders on from the stadium entrances and the Olympic Steps, and the event-day taxi rank is on Engineers Way. Allegiant puts rideshare in Lot N at 5285 Dean Martin Drive. MSG has two step-free routes from Penn Station, using elevators PW-9 and PW-3.
Three big dates already on the calendar
Two of these venues have confirmed championship events that will take their local hotel markets apart:
- Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium, Sunday 14 February 2027. Expect the whole week to fill across Inglewood, LAX, Santa Monica and Downtown LA, with the closest hotels going first.
- CFP National Championship at Allegiant Stadium, Monday 25 January 2027. Book refundable before the semifinals decide the teams, and compare across nights — January usually brings a major convention to Las Vegas as well.
One venue has already had its moment: MetLife hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on 19 July 2026, which is a useful benchmark for how that market behaves under pressure.
City centre or next to the ground?
This is the question readers ask most, and the honest answer differs by venue rather than by preference.
Stay next to the ground at Madison Square Garden, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Bernabéu. In all three the stadium sits inside a real district with restaurants, transit and things to do on the non-match day, so you give up nothing by being close.
Stay central and travel out at Wembley and Anfield. Wembley Park is a nine-minute train from Marylebone, so a Baker Street or Marylebone base costs you almost nothing in travel time and gives you all of London the rest of the trip. Anfield sits in a residential area about two miles from Liverpool city centre with only a handful of hotels nearby; unless you land Hotel Anfield four minutes from the turnstiles, the city centre plus the 917 bus is the better trip.
Split the difference at SoFi and Allegiant. Hollywood Park is building up around SoFi — a new Kali Hotel, Autograph Collection, is going up right beside the stadium, so check whether it has opened for your dates. At Allegiant, Mandalay Bay is the classic game-day base at about a 20-minute walk across the Hacienda Avenue bridge, and the stadium is under three miles from Harry Reid International.
And at MetLife, stay where the train is. Carlstadt and East Rutherford have the closest beds, but a Secaucus- or Manhattan-based trip using the event shuttle train — about 10 minutes from Secaucus, about 25 from Hoboken — is often cheaper and always has more options.
How we put this together
Every figure here comes from one of our eight venue guides, which take transit fares, parking rules and road-closure times from the stadium’s and transit operator’s own published pages, with the date we checked recorded on the page. Where an operator publishes conflicting information — as Liverpool FC does for the Soccerbus — we say so rather than pick one.
Room rates appear nowhere on this site. On an event weekend they can double inside a day, so any price we wrote would be wrong before you read it. We earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you, and it does not affect which hotels we list or their order. See our affiliate disclosure.
