Cruise Port Hotels: Compare 16 Ports (2026 Guide)

Start here: what actually decides where you sleep

Most cruise-hotel advice stops at “stay near the port.” That is not the decision. The decision is a trade-off between three things that pull against each other at almost every port: how far the hotel is from the terminal, whether it will keep your car for the week, and whether it runs a shuttle on the morning you sail.

Very few hotels give you all three. At Port Canaveral the Radisson bundles parking and a shuttle but sits about three miles out. At San Diego four hotels are literally across the road from the terminal, so the shuttle question disappears. At Barcelona no hotel shuttle matters at all, because parking at the terminals is banned outright and everyone takes the port’s own bus.

So the useful question is not “which hotel is closest.” It is “which of the three do I actually need at this port?” The table below answers that for all sixteen ports we cover, and each row links to the full guide with hotel-by-hotel detail.

The five ports where you can genuinely walk to the ship

Walking distance is the single most over-claimed figure in cruise-hotel listings. A hotel “near the port” is often a mile away across an industrial dock road with no pavement. These are the ports where walking with luggage is actually realistic:

  • San Diego — four hotels sit roughly 0.1 miles away, directly across from the B Street Terminal. The shortest walk of any port we cover.
  • Vancouver — the Pan Pacific is built above the terminal. You take a lift from the lobby. Others sit 0.15–0.3 miles away.
  • Boston — Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn are about 0.2 miles from Flynn Cruiseport.
  • Manhattan — Kimpton Ink48 and the Fairfield Inn are about 0.4 miles from Piers 88–90.
  • Southampton — voco is about a six-minute walk to the City Terminal, with three more hotels inside fifteen minutes.

At the other end: Baltimore is the port most often misjudged. The Inner Harbor is where you want to stay and where the hotels are, but it is not walkable to the ship. The closest hotel to the Cruise Maryland Terminal is 0.7 miles, and the route is not a pleasant one with bags.

Parking: the number that varies most

Across sixteen ports, published parking runs from $20 a day at Port Canaveral and Baltimore to $45 a night in Manhattan — and on a seven-night cruise that difference is over $200. Three patterns are worth knowing before you book:

Some ports will not take your card

PortMiami garages refuse debit cards entirely — cash, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover or US traveler’s checks only. Port Canaveral is the reverse: cash-free, major credit card only at the entrance. Galveston’s official lots take no cash. Turning up with the wrong payment method at 10am on embarkation day is a bad morning.

Height limits catch out anyone in a van or SUV

New Orleans is the tightest we found: the Erato Street Garage allows 8 ft 4 in on the third floor and only 7 ft 6 in above it, while 100 Poydras caps at 6 ft 6 in. Long Beach has a seven-foot limit. Vancouver’s parkade runs about 6 ft 6 in on P1 and 6 ft 9 in on P2.

A hotel package can beat the port lot outright

At Port Canaveral the Radisson has offered parking at $12.95 a night plus 7% tax with a round-trip shuttle for up to four people. Against the port’s $20 a day, a seven-night cruise works out at roughly $104 versus $160 — and you arrive without driving to the terminal. This is the single most reliable way to save money at a US port, and it is worth checking at every one.

Shuttles: ask the right question

“Does the hotel have a cruise shuttle?” is the wrong question. Ask these three instead, because the answers vary wildly even between hotels in the same block:

  1. Is it free or per person? At Port Canaveral, SpringHill Suites charges $10.80 per person each way and TownePlace $12.00 — for a family of four that is close to $100 round trip, which changes the maths on a “cheaper” hotel.
  2. Does it run on your sailing day? PortMiami’s free hotel shuttle runs only on cruise days. Several others run on request.
  3. Is it a hotel shuttle or a port shuttle? At Barcelona and Civitavecchia there is no meaningful hotel shuttle — Barcelona runs a Port Cruise Bus at €3.50 one way, and Civitavecchia runs a free Blue Line between the docks and Largo della Pace every 20–25 minutes.

Three ports with rules that catch people out

Barcelona: parking at the terminals is prohibited, full stop. Drop-off and pick-up only. Most ships use Moll Adossat rather than the walkable World Trade Center berths, so the Cruise Bus to La Rambla is the standard link, and the fixed taxi fare from El Prat to Moll Adossat is €46.

Manhattan: there is no luggage storage at the terminals, garages run roughly 8am–7pm with a 3pm checkout, and spaces are not guaranteed. Baggage processing does not start before 9:30am, so arriving early buys you nothing.

Vancouver: ride-hailing may only drop off on parkade level P2. Drop-offs on Canada Place Way, Howe Street and Cordova Street are prohibited — tell your driver before you set off, not when you arrive.

Flying in: which ports need a buffer day

The gap between the easiest and hardest airport transfer on this list is enormous, and it decides whether you can fly in on sailing day at all.

Fly in the same morning if you must: Port Everglades sits about two miles from Fort Lauderdale airport, roughly a ten-minute drive. San Diego is two to three miles from its airport. Boston’s Flynn Cruiseport is about 3.6 miles from Logan, and the free Silver Line SL1 then SL2 gets you within walking distance without a fare.

Build in a night: Galveston has no commercial airport of its own — Houston Hobby is about 50 miles away and Bush Intercontinental about 70, which is a one to one-and-a-half hour drive before you account for Texas traffic. Port Canaveral is about 45 miles from Orlando, and the I-4 corridor is unpredictable enough that the port’s own 45-minute estimate is optimistic on a bad day.

Treat as a separate journey: Civitavecchia is around 70 km from Rome Fiumicino and roughly 80 km from central Rome. A €12 BIRG day pass covers a round-trip train plus Rome public transport, which is the cheapest way in, but it is not something to attempt with a sailing deadline the same afternoon.

How to use these guides

Each port guide follows the same structure, so you can read one the same way you read the last: the areas worth staying in, a hotel comparison table with distances and shuttle costs, the parking maths for a 4-night and a 7-night cruise, airport transfer options with current fares, and a FAQ covering the questions people actually ask about that port.

If you are sailing from a Florida port, start with the parking comparison — that is where the money is. If you are sailing from a European port, start with the transfer section, because the port shuttle usually matters more than the hotel. And at every port, book the hotel before the parking: parking rarely sells out, and the walkable hotels always do.

How we put this together

Every figure on this page comes from one of our sixteen port guides, and each of those takes its parking rates, shuttle fees and drive times from the port authority’s own published information and each hotel’s own site, with the date we checked recorded on the page. Room rates are deliberately not listed anywhere on this site — they move daily, and a price written in October is wrong by November.

We earn a commission if you book through our links. It costs you nothing extra and it does not change which hotels we list or the order we list them in. Our affiliate disclosure sets out exactly how that works.
