Getting from the airport

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is about 15 miles from the cruise terminals, usually 25 to 40 minutes by taxi or rideshare.

Before you sail: three things worth booking ahead

Airport to hotel. If you land at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International and would rather skip the taxi line, a pre-booked private transfer (Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi) gives you a fixed price and a driver waiting at arrivals.

Bags between checkout and boarding. Hotel checkout and boarding time rarely match. Radical Storage lets you leave your luggage for a few hours so you can enjoy the day hands-free before heading to the New Orleans cruise terminal.

If you arrive a day early. A simple plan is a day in the French Quarter or on a swamp tour; you can browse tours and tickets on Klook before you go.

How to choose the right area for your cruise stay

Most travelers booking a night before a New Orleans sailing are really choosing between three things: how close they want to be to the ship, how much of the city they want to see, and how much noise they can tolerate. The two cruise terminals, Erato Street and Julia Street, sit on the Mississippi riverfront, and the Port describes them as roughly five minutes from the French Quarter. That short gap means you do not have to sleep right next to the pier to make a smooth boarding, which frees you to pick the neighborhood you actually want to wake up in.

If you value atmosphere and plan to spend your evening on foot, a hotel in or near the French Quarter makes sense, but expect street noise late into the night, especially on weekends. If you want a quieter room and easier car access, the Warehouse District and the area around the Convention Center usually feel calmer after dark and still keep you close to the river. If you are driving and parking before the cruise, a hotel with a clear parking arrangement can matter more than a famous address. Decide which of these priorities is non-negotiable before you start comparing rooms, because a cheaper room in the wrong area often costs you more in taxis and lost sleep.

Using the riverfront streetcar and your own feet

The Port notes that the cruise terminals offer easy access to the riverfront streetcar line, which is useful for a light, low-stress arrival day. Rather than relying on a taxi for every short hop, check the current route map and fare on the city transit authority website, and look at where the nearest stop sits relative to your hotel. A hotel within a short walk of the riverfront line can turn the afternoon before boarding into a simple loop: drop your bags, ride or walk to the river, and be back with time to spare.

Walking is realistic in many parts of the central city, but plan around heat and humidity if you are traveling in warmer months. Carry water, wear comfortable shoes, and avoid dragging a suitcase over long stretches of uneven sidewalk. If your hotel is a mile or more from the terminal, you will most likely want a taxi or rideshare on embarkation morning, so build that into your budget instead of assuming you will walk with luggage.

When to book and how to use free-cancellation rates

Cruise departure days drive hotel demand, and rooms near the terminals tend to fill earlier when several ships sail on the same day or when a large event is in town. A sensible approach is to book a refundable rate as soon as your cruise is confirmed, then keep watching. If a better price or a better location appears later, you can rebook and cancel the first reservation without penalty, provided you read the cancellation deadline carefully and set a reminder a few days before it.

Do not treat a free-cancellation booking as a guarantee that nothing can go wrong. Check whether the deadline is in the hotel’s local time, whether taxes or resort-style fees are charged separately, and whether a deposit is taken at booking. Prepaid, non-refundable rates can look attractive, but flight delays and cruise schedule changes are exactly the situations where flexibility pays for itself.

Planning embarkation and disembarkation day

Cruise lines assign boarding windows, and arriving too early can mean waiting outside the terminal while arriving late can compress your check-in. Look at the arrival time printed on your boarding documents and plan your hotel checkout and transfer around it, leaving a buffer for traffic and luggage handling. If your hotel will hold bags after checkout, ask about it in advance so you can enjoy a last breakfast without hauling suitcases.

On the way home, remember that ships typically return early in the morning and that flights from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International are best booked with generous margins. Many cruisers prefer to book a flight later in the day, or stay an extra night, so that a delayed docking never turns into a missed departure. If you are staying on after the cruise, ask your hotel whether you can store luggage on arrival or check in early.

Questions worth asking a hotel before you book

A short email or phone call can save a lot of trouble. Ask whether the hotel offers or arranges transport to the terminals, whether there is a fee for parking and how it is charged, and whether parking is on site or at a nearby lot. Ask what time standard check-in begins and whether early arrival is possible if your flight lands in the morning.

If anyone in your group has mobility needs, ask about step-free access from the street, elevator reliability, roll-in showers, and the distance from the entrance to the room. For families, ask about connecting rooms and cribs. For late-night arrivals, confirm the front desk hours so that your reservation is not released. These details rarely appear in a hotel’s headline description, and hearing the answer in writing gives you something to point to if plans change.

New Orleans cruise terminals, garages and driving directions

The Port of New Orleans lists two cruise terminals. The Erato Street Cruise Terminal is at 1100 Port of New Orleans Place and serves Carnival, and the Julia Street Cruise Terminal is at 920 Port of New Orleans Place and serves Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Check your boarding documents because the terminal depends on your cruise line.

The port lists two parking garages. The Erato Street Garage has more than 1,000 covered spaces and opens at 9:00 AM, with a height limit of 8 feet 4 inches on the third floor and 7 feet 6 inches above. Its rates are listed from $120 for 4 days to $350 for 14 days, plus $1 per day for reservations. The 100 Poydras Garage has more than 500 spaces, also opens at 9:00 AM, has a 6 feet 6 inches height limit and lists rates from $120 for 4 days to $180 for 7 days.

For driving directions, the port says to take U.S. 90 West from I-10 (Exit 234A), then Exit 11C toward Tchoupitoulas, turn right onto Tchoupitoulas, left onto Henderson and left onto Port of New Orleans Place. Rates and rules change, so confirm them on the port’s official site.

How we checked this guide

The “Last updated” date at the top of this page is when we last reviewed it end to end.

  • Parking rates, shuttle fees and transport times are taken from the port’s, venue’s or operator’s own published pages and from each hotel’s own website — not from aggregator sites.
  • Distances and journey times are the figures the venue or transit operator publishes, not our estimates. Where we give a distance, we say what it is measured to.
  • Hotel amenities (breakfast, shuttle hours, pet and parking policies) come from each hotel’s own site. These change more often than anything else here, so confirm them when you book.
  • Room rates are deliberately not listed anywhere on this site. They move daily, and a price written one month is wrong the next. Our links take you to live pricing instead.
  • We have not stayed at every hotel we write about. Where we contacted a property directly, the guide says so and gives the date. Where a figure comes from a third-party report rather than an official source, we say that too.
