Sailing from PortMiami? Spending the night before your cruise in Miami is the safest way to make sure you are on board on time. The port sits on its own island, just across a short bridge from Downtown Miami, so even a hotel a few miles away puts you only minutes from the terminal. This guide covers where to stay, which hotels run cruise shuttles, and what to know about parking.
Quick answer: stay in Downtown Miami if you want the shortest ride to the port, in Brickell for restaurants and nightlife, or near Miami International Airport if you are flying in late and want an easy shuttle the next morning.

Where to stay near PortMiami: the main areas
| Area | Distance to the port | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Miami / Bayside | About 1 mile | Shortest transfer, walkable waterfront, Bayside Marketplace |
| Brickell | About 2 miles | Restaurants, rooftop bars and a fun night before you sail |
| Miami Airport area | About 5–8 miles | Late flights, budget rooms and hotels with cruise shuttles |

PortMiami cruise parking
According to PortMiami, long-term parking at most port garages costs $25 per day, while some cruise-line garages charge more (for example, the Norwegian garage has charged $35 per day). PortMiami garages do not accept debit cards. On a 7-night cruise, parking can easily reach $200, so a hotel park-and-cruise package can be a better deal if you are driving.
Getting from Miami airport to the cruise port
Miami International Airport (MIA) is about 8 miles from PortMiami, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car without traffic. Your options are a taxi or rideshare, a cruise line transfer bus, a private shuttle, or a hotel shuttle if you stay the night near the airport. If you are flying into Fort Lauderdale instead, see our guide to hotels near Port Everglades.
Before you sail: three things worth booking ahead
Airport to hotel. If you land at Miami International and would rather skip the taxi line, a pre-booked private transfer (Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi) gives you a fixed price and a driver waiting at arrivals.
Bags between checkout and boarding. Hotel checkout and boarding time rarely match. Radical Storage lets you leave your luggage for a few hours so you can enjoy the day hands-free before heading to PortMiami.
If you arrive a day early. A simple plan is a few hours in South Beach or Wynwood; you can browse tours and tickets on Klook before you go.

Tips for the night before your cruise
- Book a refundable rate in case your flight is delayed or cancelled.
- Book your hotel shuttle in advance, as most run on fixed morning schedules.
- Keep documents, medications and a swimsuit in your carry-on bag.
- Arrive at the terminal at your assigned boarding time to avoid long lines.
- If you have a free evening, Bayside Marketplace and Brickell are both close to the port.
How to choose between Miami neighborhoods for a cruise night
The right base depends on what you want from the stay. If you are flying in the day before and mostly need a bed close to the ship, an airport-area hotel keeps the transfer simple and usually gives you the widest choice of rooms. If you would rather feel like you have already started the holiday, Downtown and Brickell put restaurants, waterfront walks and rooftop bars within reach, and the port is a short ride away instead of a long one.
Think about how you will actually spend the evening. Travelers who plan to arrive late and leave early often care more about a quiet room and a reliable breakfast than a view. Those with a free afternoon tend to prefer a neighborhood where they can walk to dinner without arranging a car. Be honest about which group you belong to before you filter by price, because a cheaper room that adds an extra taxi each way can quietly cost more than a better-placed one.
Booking timing and free cancellation for cruise stays
Cruise dates are usually fixed months ahead, which means you can book the pre-cruise hotel early and still keep your options open. Choose a rate that allows free cancellation up to a day or two before arrival, then check back once or twice as the date approaches. If the same room drops in price, you can rebook it, and if your flight changes, you are not stuck with a non-refundable night.
Sailing dates for popular school-holiday and winter weeks tend to fill hotels earlier, so do not leave the booking until the final fortnight. Before you confirm, read the cancellation terms carefully, note the cut-off time in the hotel’s local time, and save the confirmation email where you can reach it offline.
Embarkation-day planning from the hotel
Cruise lines generally assign arrival windows, and PortMiami has been reported to use a port arrival time system, so check your own booking for the slot you were given rather than assuming you can turn up whenever you like. Plan to leave the hotel with enough margin that a slow traffic stretch or a queue for a car does not push you past your window.
Keep passports, boarding documents and any health or travel forms in a small bag you carry personally, not in the suitcases you hand over to porters. Check out before you leave, ask the front desk whether they can hold bags if you are early, and confirm the pickup point for your rideshare or taxi so you do not wander the wrong entrance. Charge your phone overnight, because the cruise line app often holds your boarding information.
PortMiami parking: garages, daily rates and payment
Miami-Dade County’s PortMiami parking page lists terminals AA, A, B, C, D, E, F, G and V on the north side, with garages AA, A, B, C, D and G plus surface lots C, D and E, and Terminal J on the south side served by Garages J and K. Listed daily rates are $20 short-term and $35 long-term at Garage AA, $35 short-term at Garage B (the NCL garage), $10 short-term and $25 long-term at Garages C, D, F and G, and $25 per day at Surface Lot E, which also takes oversized vehicles and RVs.
Payment is by cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover or major U.S. traveler’s checks, and debit cards are not accepted. Parking is staffed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on cruise days, a free shuttle runs only on cruise days, every garage has designated disabled-permit spaces with two complimentary hours, and all areas are patrolled by security. Rates change, so confirm on the official page.
How we checked this guide
The “Last updated” date at the top of this page is when we last reviewed it end to end.
- Parking rates, shuttle fees and transport times are taken from the port’s, venue’s or operator’s own published pages and from each hotel’s own website — not from aggregator sites.
- Distances and journey times are the figures the venue or transit operator publishes, not our estimates. Where we give a distance, we say what it is measured to.
- Hotel amenities (breakfast, shuttle hours, pet and parking policies) come from each hotel’s own site. These change more often than anything else here, so confirm them when you book.
- Room rates are deliberately not listed anywhere on this site. They move daily, and a price written one month is wrong the next. Our links take you to live pricing instead.
- We have not stayed at every hotel we write about. Where we contacted a property directly, the guide says so and gives the date. Where a figure comes from a third-party report rather than an official source, we say that too.

Frequently asked questions
What is the closest hotel to PortMiami?
Hotels on Biscayne Boulevard in Downtown Miami, such as the DoubleTree by Hilton Grand Hotel Biscayne Bay, are about a mile from the cruise terminals. There are no hotels on the port island itself.
Do Miami hotels offer free cruise shuttles?
Only a few do. Most hotels charge a small per-person fee for the shuttle, and some include it in a park-and-cruise package. Always check the current price and schedule with the hotel.
Is it better to stay in Miami or Fort Lauderdale before a cruise?
Stay in Miami if your ship leaves from PortMiami. The ports are about 30 miles apart and traffic between them can be heavy, so staying near your own port is safer.
