Where to Stay Near the Southampton Cruise Terminals: Best Hotels (2026 Guide)

Last updated: October 25, 2026 · By Ronen, Stay Near The Venue

Southampton is the UK’s main cruise port, with several terminals including the City, Ocean, Mayflower, QEII and Horizon terminals. The city centre is close to all of them, so a hotel night in Southampton turns embarkation day into a short taxi ride.

Quick answer: stay in the city centre / West Quay area for a short walk or taxi to most terminals. Many hotels offer stay-and-park packages so you can leave your car for the length of your cruise.

Getting to Southampton

Southampton is around 80 miles from London. Trains run from London Waterloo to Southampton Central in about 80 minutes, and the terminals are a short taxi ride from the station. Heathrow is roughly 1.5 hours away by road.

Before you sail: three things worth booking ahead

Airport to hotel. If you land at London Heathrow or Gatwick and would rather skip the taxi line, a pre-booked private transfer (Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi) gives you a fixed price and a driver waiting at arrivals.

Bags between checkout and boarding. Hotel checkout and boarding time rarely match. Radical Storage lets you leave your luggage for a few hours so you can enjoy the day hands-free before heading to the Southampton cruise terminals.

If you arrive a day early. A simple plan is a day exploring the city or a trip to nearby historic sites; you can browse tickets and tours on Tiqets before you go.

Choosing between Southampton city centre and the waterfront

Southampton is compact enough that most cruise passengers can choose between a hotel near the waterfront and one in the heart of the city without much stress. The areas near the docks and Ocean Village tend to be quieter in the evening, with a marina outlook, while the area around West Quay and the main shopping streets offers more restaurants, cafés and evening options. If you want to eat out and wander on your last night ashore, the city centre gives you more to do. If you prefer a calm night and the shortest possible transfer, stay closer to the docks.

Think too about how you are travelling. Guests arriving by train will want a hotel within easy reach of Southampton Central station, because a short taxi ride or walk with luggage beats a long transfer. Guests arriving by car need to ask the hotel directly whether parking is available, how much it costs and whether it can be used for the duration of the cruise, since policies vary widely and not every city hotel offers long-stay parking.

Read recent guest reviews for comments about noise, since a room facing a busy road or nightlife street can mean a poor night before a long trip.

Understanding Southampton’s cruise terminals

Southampton’s cruise ships dock at several different terminals, and they are not interchangeable. Your cruise documents will name the terminal you need, and it is worth checking this before you book a hotel or a taxi. Some terminals sit close to the city centre while others are on the western docks, so the same hotel can be an easy trip for one ship and a longer ride for another.

Once you know your terminal, a taxi from your hotel is the simplest option for most travellers, particularly with large cases. Ask the hotel whether it can book a taxi for a set time, or whether it works with a local firm, so that you are not looking for a car on embarkation morning when many other passengers are doing the same.

If you are unsure, the cruise line’s own booking confirmation and the port’s official information are the best sources. Do not rely on a friend’s memory of which terminal a ship used last year, because lines and ships do change berths from one sailing to the next.

Getting there from London and further afield

Many passengers reach Southampton from London or from airports in the south of England. Trains run to Southampton Central, and there are also coach options, and cruise lines often sell their own coach transfers from certain cities. These are convenient because they link directly with embarkation times, but they are not the only choice. Compare the cost and timing of a cruise-line transfer with a train ticket and a taxi, and check whether booking train tickets in advance gives a better fare. Prices change, so check current fares rather than relying on a figure you saw months ago.

If you are flying into the UK, think about whether to stay near the airport or near the port. A night near the terminals means a relaxed final leg, while an airport hotel adds an extra transfer. For long-haul arrivals, a night in Southampton itself is usually the calmer choice.

Whatever route you choose, build in extra time. Rail engineering works at weekends and occasional disruption can affect the journey, so check the operator’s journey planner the day before you travel.

Booking tips: flexible rates, breakfast and luggage

Cruise dates are fixed, so the hotel should be the flexible part of your plan. Choose a rate with free cancellation where you can, and note the cancellation deadline in your calendar. If your flight changes, you can then move the booking without penalty.

Check whether breakfast is included and what time it starts. Some cruise passengers have an early boarding slot and prefer to eat at the hotel. Ask, too, whether the hotel will store luggage after check-out if your boarding time is later in the day, and whether there is a charge.

If anyone in your party uses a wheelchair or has limited mobility, ask the hotel about step-free access, lift size, room layout and bathroom type before you book. A short email or call can prevent a difficult arrival. The same goes for families with prams or anyone with a lot of baggage: ask about the route from the entrance to the room, and whether there is a luggage trolley available.

Southampton cruise terminals, dock gates and parking

Visit Southampton lists five cruise terminals: Ocean, Queen Elizabeth, City, Horizon and Mayflower. Terminals in the Eastern Docks are reached through Dock Gate 4 and the City terminal, and those in the Western Docks through Dock Gate 10; the City Terminal can also be reached through Dock Gate 8 and the Mayflower through Dock Gate 20. Check your cruise documents for the terminal and gate.

Southampton Central station is less than 2 miles from the terminals, a taxi or bus ride of typically under 10 minutes, and Southampton Airport is about 5 miles away with transfers in 20 to 30 minutes. Official parking providers include ABParking and CPS, with spaces next to or a short walk from the terminals, and the Triangle Car Park offers park-and-ride with a complimentary shuttle. By road the port is reached from the M3 and M27, and rail services run from London Waterloo, Birmingham and Manchester.

How we checked this guide

The “Last updated” date at the top of this page is when we last reviewed it end to end.

  • Parking rates, shuttle fees and transport times are taken from the port’s, venue’s or operator’s own published pages and from each hotel’s own website — not from aggregator sites.
  • Distances and journey times are the figures the venue or transit operator publishes, not our estimates. Where we give a distance, we say what it is measured to.
  • Hotel amenities (breakfast, shuttle hours, pet and parking policies) come from each hotel’s own site. These change more often than anything else here, so confirm them when you book.
  • Room rates are deliberately not listed anywhere on this site. They move daily, and a price written one month is wrong the next. Our links take you to live pricing instead.
  • We have not stayed at every hotel we write about. Where we contacted a property directly, the guide says so and gives the date. Where a figure comes from a third-party report rather than an official source, we say that too.
