Hotels Near Charleston Cruise Port (2026): Where to Stay Now

Last updated: October 19, 2026 · By Ronen, Stay Near The Venue

If you are searching for hotels near the Charleston cruise port, the first thing to know is that the port changed in 2026. The Union Pier passenger terminal at 196 Concord St, the downtown building Carnival used as a homeport for years, received its last cruise ship on June 30, 2026. Ships that still visit Charleston now tie up at the Columbus Street Terminal, a cargo dock about 1.5 miles north of the historic district. This guide covers what that means for your hotel, transfers and parking. If you are also comparing other East Coast ports, see our Baltimore cruise port hotel guide.

Quick answer: Stay in the historic district, either near Waterfront Park (The Vendue, HarbourView Inn, Market Pavilion) or around Marion Square (Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn, Courtyard). Charleston no longer has big-ship homeport departures or an SC Ports cruise parking lot, so a park-and-cruise package doesn’t really apply. Small-ship guests and port-call visitors should confirm the exact berth with their cruise line, then take a short taxi or rideshare.

Which cruise lines sail from Charleston now?

Carnival’s last Charleston departure was the Carnival Sunshine’s New Year’s sailing at the end of 2024. Carnival then moved the ship to Norfolk, and no large line has homeported in Charleston since. In 2026, Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas and the Norwegian Jewel called on port-of-call itineraries from other cities, and the Norwegian Jewel was the last ship to dock at Union Pier on June 30, 2026 (Cruise Industry News). The State Ports Authority agreed to sell Union Pier for redevelopment, and the buyer committed to ending cruise operations there (Post and Courier).

Later 2026 visitors reported include Scenic Eclipse, Viking Octantis, Sapphire Princess and several American Cruise Lines small ships (Cruise Fever). American Cruise Lines is the main way to actually start a cruise here: its Southeast Sea Islands itinerary includes a Charleston hotel night, embarks the next day, and ends at Amelia Island, Florida. The line handles the transfer, so check your documents for the meeting point.

Walkable waterfront hotels in the historic district

  • The Vendue – 19 Vendue Range in the French Quarter, about 300 feet from Waterfront Park and 0.2 miles from the City Market. This art-filled boutique hotel has a rooftop bar, evening milk and cookies, bike rentals and luggage storage. It suits couples who want a pre- or post-cruise night in the center of everything.
  • HarbourView Inn – 2 Vendue Range, overlooking Waterfront Park, a short walk to Rainbow Row and the Battery. Continental breakfast and an evening wine and cheese reception are included, and there is onsite parking. A good pick for a classic Charleston inn stay.
  • Market Pavilion Hotel – 225 East Bay St, across from the historic City Market. This Leading Hotels of the World member has a rooftop pool and bar overlooking the harbor and the Grill 225 steakhouse. Best for a splurge night before or after a small-ship cruise.

Best value near Marion Square

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Charleston Historic District – 337 Meeting St, in the old Citadel building on Marion Square, about 12 miles from CHS airport. Breakfast is included and every room is a suite, so it suits families and groups who want space.
  • Hampton Inn Charleston-Historic District – 345 Meeting St, next to the Charleston Visitor Center and one block from King Street, about a 22-minute drive from the airport. It has a free hot breakfast, a courtyard pool and covered self-parking ($43 per day, per the listing). It’s a dependable mid-range base.
  • Courtyard Charleston Historic District – 125 Calhoun St, a 1-minute walk to Marion Square and about 16 minutes on foot to Waterfront Park. It has an outdoor pool with cabanas, and valet parking is $40 per night. A practical choice if you are driving in.

Getting there, shuttles & parking

  • From CHS airport: Downtown is about 12 miles away, roughly a 20- to 25-minute drive. According to Charleston International Airport, taxis have a $17 minimum and a starter at the median outside Baggage Claim quotes your fare. Uber, Lyft and KreweCar pick up in Zones 1-3, and CARTA buses run to downtown from a stop outside Baggage Claim.
  • To the ship: Columbus Street Terminal is a working cargo area surrounded by rail lines and busy roads, so you can’t walk there from the historic district. Plan on a short taxi or rideshare, or your line’s shuttle. Port-call passengers are usually shuttled into town.
  • Cruise parking: With Union Pier closed to cruises and no homeport sailings, SC Ports does not publish a cruise parking rate for 2026. Don’t prepay any parking until your line confirms the berth. If you are driving to an American Cruise Lines departure, you can usually park at your hotel (rates above) and ask about leaving the car for the length of the cruise. Questions go to the SC Ports cruise line at 843-958-8298 (SC Ports).

Tips

  • Read your final cruise documents for the berth. Older blog posts and GPS entries still point to 196 Concord St.
  • Book the night before. Small ships board on a fixed schedule, and coastal flights can be delayed by summer storms.
  • Pick a refundable rate, since Charleston port schedules have changed more than once in 2026.
  • Downtown parking adds up. If you are flying in and staying downtown, skip the rental car.
  • If you need a big-ship homeport, compare Port Canaveral or Baltimore instead.

FAQ

Do cruises still leave from Charleston, SC?

Not big-ship homeport cruises. Carnival left after its final sailing at the end of 2024. American Cruise Lines small-ship coastal cruises still embark in Charleston, and a few ocean ships call as a port stop.

Is the Union Pier cruise terminal closed?

Yes, for cruise ships. The Norwegian Jewel’s June 30, 2026 visit was its last cruise call, and the site is being sold for redevelopment.

Where do cruise ships dock in Charleston now?

Visiting ships have been sent to the Columbus Street Terminal, about 1.5 miles from the historic area. Always confirm with your cruise line, because the berth can change.

How far is the airport from downtown Charleston?

About 12 miles, or roughly 20 to 25 minutes by car. Taxis from CHS start at a $17 minimum.

Are there park-and-cruise hotels in Charleston?

We couldn’t find any advertised Charleston park-and-cruise packages for 2026, which makes sense with no homeport sailings. Downtown hotels charge for parking ($40-$43 per night at the Courtyard and Hampton Inn), so ask the hotel directly about multi-night parking.

About the author

Ronen researches and writes every guide on Stay Near The Venue. Parking rates, shuttle fees and transfer times come from the port’s, venue’s or operator’s own published pages and from each hotel’s own site, with the date we checked recorded on the page. We don’t publish room rates – they change daily, so every link goes to live pricing instead. How these guides are made
