Its “Where to Stay” page links to lists of discounted hotels in the Palo Alto area and in Emeryville. Stanford does not contract with or endorse these hotels, and discounts depend on availability. The same page lists charity lodging programs:

  • American Cancer Society Hotel Partners Program – free or reduced-cost rooms, when available, for cancer patients traveling for treatment. Ask at least five business days ahead.
  • Joe’s House – an online directory of discounted lodging for cancer patients and families.
  • JW House – free day use for all, plus four overnight rooms at $70 a night (three-night minimum) by social worker referral. Families of children get priority.

For families of children treated at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford offers family suites on Sand Hill Road. Apply through rmhcbayarea.org, or call the Packard Children’s housing office at 650-498-7971 (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Getting there, shuttles & parking

Parking at Stanford Hospital

Both Stanford Hospital buildings use the Pasteur Visitor Garage at 200 Pasteur Drive, open 24/7. Per Stanford Health Care’s website, as of October 2026, patient parking is free for the first two hours, $3 for two to three hours, $1 for each extra hour, and $18 maximum per day. Payment is by card only. A free door-to-door shuttle links the garage, 500 Pasteur, 300 Pasteur and 875/900 Blake Wilbur Drive from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, about every 10 minutes on weekdays. For on-demand rides with limited mobility, call 650-736-8000.

Parking at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital

Per Stanford Children’s Health, visitors park free for the first hour, with rates rising to $12 for 8–24 hours. Families of admitted patients get one validated parking pass, good for seven days with in-and-out privileges. Since February 1, 2026, the West lobby has been closed for about two years, so use the Main building entrance.

Caltrain and the free Marguerite shuttle

The Palo Alto Caltrain station on University Avenue is part of the Palo Alto Transit Center. From there, Stanford’s Marguerite shuttle is free and open to the public. Take the X or MC line to the medical center. Main lines run Monday to Friday, except university holidays, so check weekend options before you rely on it.

From SFO and SJC

San Francisco International (SFO) and San Jose Mineta International (SJC) are each about 20 miles from Stanford, roughly 30 minutes by car without traffic. From SFO by transit, take BART to Millbrae, then Caltrain south to Palo Alto. From SJC, a rideshare or taxi is the simplest option for most patients.

Tips for patients & families

  • Call Guest Services for the latest discounted hotel list. Rates on it change and expire.
  • Always ask hotels for a Stanford patient or medical rate when you book.
  • Book refundable rooms. Surgery and discharge dates often move.
  • For stays of a week or more, a kitchen saves money and helps with special diets.
  • Ask your social worker early about charity lodging. Some programs need several days’ notice.
  • Palo Alto hotels are often busy midweek with business travel. Book as soon as you know your dates.
