How to Get From Houston Airports (IAH & HOU) to the Galveston Cruise Port (2026)

Last updated: October 13, 2026 · By Ronen, Stay Near The Venue

Flying in for a Galveston cruise? There’s no airport on the island with commercial flights, so nearly everyone lands at one of Houston’s two airports: William P. Hobby (HOU) or George Bush Intercontinental (IAH). Then you still have a drive of 45 minutes to two hours to reach the ship. Below are the shuttles, transfers, rideshare, taxi and rental-car options, with published prices. If you’re still choosing where to sleep the night before, see our main guide to hotels near the Galveston cruise port.

Quick answer: Hobby is the closer airport, about 45 minutes from the port. IAH is about 1.5 hours away in normal traffic. The cheapest option for one or two travelers is usually Galveston Limousine Service’s shared shuttle, which currently lists $28 per person one way when booked online. Groups of three or four often do as well or better with an Uber, which averages about $58 for an UberX from Hobby.

Hobby vs. IAH: distance and drive time

The Port of Galveston’s arrival guide calls Hobby the closest airport, “just a 45-minute drive,” and puts IAH “about 1.5 hours away.” Both routes end on I-45 South. Allow at least an hour from Hobby and two from IAH, since weekend traffic can add a lot.

Pre-cruise hotels near Hobby airport

Best value: League City park-and-cruise hotels

League City sits halfway between Hobby and the island. Visit League City says its pre-cruise partner hotels offer free, secure cruise parking. That’s a strong deal if you rent a car. These hotels don’t advertise their own port shuttles, but Galveston Limousine Service does list a League City stop for its shuttle.

Galveston hotels with cruise shuttles

  • The Tremont House – about 0.3 miles from the port in the Strand District, close enough to walk. A Park & Sail package bundles parking and port transportation, which suits couples who want a historic stay.
  • Harbor House Hotel and Marina at Pier 21 – on the harbor next to the Strand, with on-site parking and a shuttle to the cruise terminals. It’s for travelers who want water views and the shortest ride.
  • Hilton Galveston Island Resort – on the Seawall, about 4.5 miles from the port, with a paid shuttle to the terminals. It works for families who want a beach day before sailing.
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Galveston – a suite hotel with a shuttle to the cruise port. It’s a good fit for groups that need kitchens and extra space.

Getting there, shuttles & parking

Galveston Limousine Service shuttle

Galveston Limousine Service runs shared shuttles from both airports. Its online special is $28 per person one way or $56 round trip from either HOU or IAH. Booking by phone costs $55/$100 from Hobby and $65/$120 from IAH. There’s a two-seat minimum, 50% of the fare is non-refundable, and bags over the allowance cost extra. Pickup at HOU is Curb Zone 4. At IAH the pickup door depends on your terminal (for example, Door A-114 in Terminal A). On debarkation day, shuttles leave the cruise terminals at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. The company warns they often run about 30 minutes late, so it suggests not booking a flight before about 11 a.m. from HOU or 12 p.m. from IAH.

Cruise line transfers

The port notes that many lines, including Royal Caribbean, sell transfers from both Houston airports. At Hobby, coach passengers are met in baggage claim. Cruzely reports that Carnival has charged about $42 per person each way from Hobby and $59 from IAH. Check the current price in your cruise booking. The ship won’t sail without a late-running transfer.

Uber, Lyft and taxis

The port names Uber and Lyft as its rideshare providers. Uber’s route page lists recent average fares from Hobby to Galveston of about $58 for UberX and $95 for UberXL. These are averages, not guaranteed prices. Cruzely estimates about $100 each way from IAH by rideshare. It also estimates taxis at about $110 each way from Hobby and $180 from IAH.

Rental car and port parking

Renting makes sense if you’re staying a few extra days, but Cruzely notes that Enterprise is the main rental company on the island, which limits one-way drop-offs. If you keep the car, the port sells reserved parking with variable pricing. Its economy lots include free shuttles to the terminals, and park-and-walk lots sit close to the ships. Book through the Port of Galveston parking page, and compare rates in our Galveston cruise parking guide.

Tips for a smooth airport-to-ship day

  • Choose Hobby over IAH when fares are close. You’ll save about 45 minutes and around $40 on rideshare each way.
  • Fly in the day before. A delayed flight or a jam on I-45 can easily turn a 45-minute ride into two hours.
  • On the way home, book flights after noon. Debarkation and the drive back to Houston take longer than most people expect.

FAQ

Which Houston airport is closest to the Galveston cruise port?

Hobby (HOU). The Port of Galveston lists it at about 45 minutes away, compared with about 1.5 hours from IAH.

Can I fly into Houston on the morning of my cruise?

It’s possible from Hobby if you land early, but it’s risky. A flight delay plus I-45 traffic can make you miss boarding. Arriving the day before is safer, especially if you’re flying into IAH.

Do cruise lines offer airport transfers in Houston?

Yes. Many lines, including Carnival and Royal Caribbean, sell transfers from both HOU and IAH. They usually cost more than an independent shuttle, but the line is responsible for getting you to the ship.

Is there public transit from Houston to the Galveston cruise port?

There’s no practical public transit option for cruisers with luggage. The port also notes that the Galveston Island Trolley doesn’t stop at the port, so plan on a shuttle, transfer, rideshare or car.
