Cupar and the East Neuk villages, such as Elie, Anstruther and Crail, have small hotels, inns and holiday cottages. Search them as a group, since each has only a handful of rooms: see stays in Cupar or the East Neuk.
Getting there, shuttles & parking
By train to Leuchars
Leuchars is the nearest rail station, about six miles from St Andrews, on the Edinburgh–Dundee–Aberdeen line. Per The Open’s getting-there page as of October 2026, ScotRail is adding services and capacity during the Championship, and a dedicated shuttle bus runs from Leuchars to the venue up to every five minutes at peak times. Expect busy trains and allow extra time. From Edinburgh Airport, take the tram to Haymarket, then a train toward Dundee or Aberdeen.
By bus
Stagecoach runs express buses from Edinburgh and Glasgow to St Andrews bus station, about five minutes’ walk from the course. The Jet 787 links Edinburgh Airport and St Andrews roughly every two hours, taking around 90 minutes. Local buses accept contactless payment. The Stagecoach 99 links St Andrews, Leuchars and Dundee on a frequent daytime service, per the University of St Andrews.
Park & ride
There is no public parking at the Old Course or in the immediate area. All public parking is at park & ride sites with free shuttle buses to the course. The Open’s website lists car parking at £20 per day on July 11–12 and £25 per day from July 13–18, with a £7 saving if you buy in advance, as of October 2026. Tickets are sold on The Open’s website and need a free One Club account. Overnight parking is not allowed. Follow the event road signs rather than your satnav.
Airports
Dundee Airport is about 15 miles away, Edinburgh about 49 miles and Glasgow about 81 miles. Edinburgh has the most international flights.
Tips for booking The Open 2027
- Book a refundable room now, even before you have tickets. You can cancel later; you cannot create rooms later.
- Some St Andrews properties may set minimum stays for Open week. Check the terms before you book.
- If town is full, choose a base with a direct train to Leuchars. Dundee and Edinburgh are the easiest.
- Practice days are quieter and a good time to walk the course before the crowds.
- Pack layers and waterproofs. Weather on the Fife coast can change by the hour.
- Book taxis ahead. The Open strongly recommends it for Championship week.
