The Manhattan Cruise Terminal sits on the Hudson River at West 48th to 52nd Street, in the Hell’s Kitchen / Midtown West neighborhood. It is one of the few big cruise ports in the world where you can stay in a city hotel and simply walk or take a short taxi to your ship.
Quick answer: stay in Midtown West (10th–12th Avenue) for a walk to the piers, or near Times Square for more hotel choice and a short taxi ride. New York also has cruise terminals in Brooklyn (Red Hook) and Bayonne, New Jersey, so check which one your ship uses.

Getting to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal
From JFK or LaGuardia, a taxi or car service is the simplest option; allow 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. From Newark, allow a similar time. If you are staying in Midtown, a yellow cab to the pier is short and inexpensive.
Before you sail: three things worth booking ahead
Airport to hotel. If you land at JFK, LaGuardia or Newark and would rather skip the taxi line, a pre-booked private transfer (Welcome Pickups or Kiwitaxi) gives you a fixed price and a driver waiting at arrivals.
Bags between checkout and boarding. Hotel checkout and boarding time rarely match. Radical Storage lets you leave your luggage for a few hours so you can enjoy the day hands-free before heading to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.
If you arrive a day early. A simple plan is a few hours of sightseeing in the city; you can browse tours and tickets on Klook before you go.

Understanding the Manhattan terminal location
The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is reported to use Piers 88 and 90 on the Hudson River, with the entrance on West 55th Street at 12th Avenue. That puts it on the far west side of Midtown, away from the main subway lines and some distance from Times Square and Central Park. Understanding that location helps you set realistic expectations when a hotel says it is near the port.
The area around the terminal is less busy than the central tourist districts, so many visitors prefer to stay in a livelier neighborhood and take a short ride on departure day. If you are staying near the water, ask the hotel how it recommends reaching the pier, and confirm which pier your ship uses before you set off.
Choosing a neighborhood: Midtown West, Times Square or elsewhere
Midtown West and Hell’s Kitchen offer plenty of restaurants and are closer to the terminal than most of Manhattan. Times Square puts you in the middle of theaters and crowds, with a longer ride to the ship. If you prefer a quieter night, a neighborhood further from the main thoroughfares may suit you, even if it adds some travel time.
Pick the area by your evening plans. If you want a Broadway show, stay close to the theater district. If you want a calm night before sailing, avoid the busiest blocks. New York hotels are known for small rooms, so if you have heavy luggage or are travelling with children, ask about room size and lift access.
Getting to the pier on departure day
A reported subway option is the Columbus Circle station, which is a short walk from the terminal for those with light bags, though with large suitcases a taxi or rideshare is usually easier. Cruise Hive reports taxi fares from major hubs in a range of about sixteen to nineteen dollars, but check current prices, because fares and traffic change.
Midtown traffic can slow things on weekdays and event days, so leave generous time. Tell your driver the pier number and the entrance cross-street. Have your luggage tags attached before you leave, and keep documents in your own bag. Porters at the terminal take large bags, but you should hold everything you need for the first few hours on board.
Booking for New York: price, timing and flexibility
New York hotel prices vary widely by season and by day, and weekends and holiday periods can be expensive. Book as soon as you can once your cruise is confirmed, and choose a free-cancellation rate so you can switch if a better option appears. Watch the total cost, including taxes and any additional fees stated at booking.
Compare the nightly price with the cost of travel to the pier. A cheaper hotel further away may cost more in time and fares than a slightly higher rate closer to the terminal. Check the cancellation cut-off in local time.
A relaxed pre-cruise day in the city
If you arrive a day early, consider something that does not tie you to a schedule. A walk through Central Park, a meal in a neighborhood you want to try, or a visit to a museum with flexible entry times all work. Check opening hours and ticket requirements on official websites, since popular attractions can require advance booking.
Avoid scheduling anything that ends close to your boarding window on departure morning. Pack the night before, charge your devices, and keep your travel documents together. Sleep matters more than an extra attraction.
Accessibility, safety and common mistakes
Ask your hotel about step-free entrances, elevator reliability and accessible rooms, and ask the cruise line about assistance at the terminal. Use ordinary city sense: keep valuables close in crowded areas, use licensed taxis or established rideshare apps, and avoid carrying everything in one bag.
The most common mistakes are assuming the terminal is within walking distance of Times Square, leaving too little time for traffic, and booking a non-refundable room before flights are confirmed. Also double-check the pier your ship uses and whether any other ships are sailing the same day.
Manhattan Cruise Terminal: address, parking and boarding times
The Manhattan Cruise Terminal is at 711 12th Avenue, New York, NY 10019, and is managed by Ports America, according to the city’s cruise information pages. New York City Economic Development Corporation advises passengers to use public transportation where possible. The Brooklyn terminal is a separate facility at Pier 12, 72 Imlay Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231, so confirm which terminal your ship uses.
If you drive, parking is on site above each pier and the vehicle entrance is at 55th Street and 12th Avenue. The garages typically open from 8 am to 7 pm, the best arrival window is listed as 10 am to 2 pm, and spaces are not guaranteed. There is no luggage storage at the terminals.
Boarding generally begins between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm, baggage processing starts no earlier than 9:30 am, and the recommended arrival time is not before 11 am. Your cruise line sets the actual schedule, so rely on your own documents and check the official site for current rules.
How we checked this guide
The “Last updated” date at the top of this page is when we last reviewed it end to end.
- Parking rates, shuttle fees and transport times are taken from the port’s, venue’s or operator’s own published pages and from each hotel’s own website — not from aggregator sites.
- Distances and journey times are the figures the venue or transit operator publishes, not our estimates. Where we give a distance, we say what it is measured to.
- Hotel amenities (breakfast, shuttle hours, pet and parking policies) come from each hotel’s own site. These change more often than anything else here, so confirm them when you book.
- Room rates are deliberately not listed anywhere on this site. They move daily, and a price written one month is wrong the next. Our links take you to live pricing instead.
- We have not stayed at every hotel we write about. Where we contacted a property directly, the guide says so and gives the date. Where a figure comes from a third-party report rather than an official source, we say that too.
